1. Not Enrolling in Time
Your Medicare enrollment window starts 3 months before you turn 65 and ends 3 months after you turn 65. If you don’t sign up within this timeframe you will be subject to a late enrollment penalty.
2. Not Enrolling in Part D Even if You Currently Don’t Take Any Drugs
If you do not enroll in Part D within 62 days, you will have to pay higher premiums for the rest of your life if/when you decide to enroll in the future.
3. Choosing Drug Coverage that Doesn’t Fully Cover Your Prescriptions
Every Part D plan has a list of covered drugs called a formulary. If you choose a plan that doesn’t cover the drug or drugs you take, you will have to file an appeal or pay for them out of pocket. Depending on the drugs you take, the out-of-pocket costs can be substantial.
4. Not Checking for Changes in Your Medicare Plan Each Year
Each Year there is a chance that your Medicare plan can change. These changes can come in the form of benefits, premiums, deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, and formularies. If you’re not aware of these changes you can end up losing benefits and paying more.
